The wine estate

Since 1648, Weingut Künstler has been a family-owned business. Unteil the end of World War II , the family cultivated their estate which was located 80 km north of the Austrian capital Vienna, in Untertannowitz in the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic.  After expropriation and expulsion, Franz Künstler had to leave the century-old homeland of his family and in 1965 he re-established the Weingut Künstler in Hochheim Main/Rheingau. Due to his philosophy of uncompromising quality, his wines were promptly very much acclaimed on the occasion of wine tastings and gained considerable number of awards.
Since 1992, the estate is owned by his son Gunter pursuing his father´s philosophy and assisted by his wife Monika and by a very committed young team. Since 1994, Weingut Künstler is a member of the VDP/ The Assiociation of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates.

Year after year, the estate gains countless national and international awards and ranks among the most renowned German wine estates.

Hochheim am Main

It is a cute natural wonder that the River Rhine on its way from south to north changes its direction and begins to flow westwards for about 35 kilometres. Hochheim, our hometown, is the only wine-growing community in the Rheingau region which is directly located on the River Main. Here, shortly before joining the Rhine, the River Main flows around a south-facing and cone-shaped hill that is neither shaded from the east nor from the west. This is where the Rheingau offers the "King of White Wines", the Riesling, a unique south-facing location while up to 880 meter-high mountain ranges of the Taunus protect the vines against the cold north winds. This creates a Mediterranean microclimate along the 50 degree line of latitude where even lemons, figs and almonds can ripen. And it is that northern location that in the summer months provides longer periods of sunshine during the daytime. Thus, the Riesling grapes are able to ripen fully, even at moderate temperatures. This favourable location, supported by the light reflection and warming influence of both rivers, guarantees the uniqueness of these vinayard sites. The Rheingau is our home, one of the worldwide smallest and most exquisite wine-growing regions.
