Rüdesheimer Bischofsberg Riesling "Alte Reben"

we own 1.2 acres of this vineyard
grape variety: 100% Riesling

Site and soil: The name of the site ("Hill of the Bishop") is a reminder of the Archbishop of Mainz gifting it to a Rüdesheim vintner in 1074. So-called whispering winds pull across the Bischofsberg in the morning and blow away the morning mist. This dries the vines and leads to a long ripening period for the grapes. In the north, the vineyard is sheltered from cold gusts of wind by the Niederwald forest. The deep soil has excellent water-retaining qualities.

Character: The vines, of which some are more than fifty years old, grow on shale and quartzite soil that produces full-bodied and mineral wines with stone fruit aromas.
